It was more than 70 years after Antarctica was first sighted in 1820 that mankind finally began to explore the continent in 1892. The subsequent 30-year period is often referred to as the Heroic Age in Antarctica, a time of initial winter habitation and audacious treks inland toward the South Pole. This talk will provide an overview of that historic period with particular emphasis on the most meaningful and well-known of these early expeditions.
