SUMMARY:Open House at Westerly’s Home of Revolutionary History
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we celebrate the 250 years since Rhode Island’s Renunciation Act which came before the Declaration of Independence. Our 1734 house will be filled with documents such as Joshua’s will and estate inventory\, letters Franklin wrote to Joshua\, furniture which graced those homes and even games and toys for children\, so bring the whole family as there will be something for everyone.  Refreshments will include items made from authentic colonial recipes.  Colonial games can be purchased at Joshua’s Store.  Alex Nunes will read the Act of Renunciation at 2:15. \nLater that evening\, you can visit nearby Ward Field for food trucks and a drone show sponsored by the Town of Westerly. \n

SUMMARY:Babcock Portraits by Joseph Blackburn
DESCRIPTION:Pesented by Sara Champlin \nFour members of the Babcock family were painted by Joseph Blackburn\, one of the most sought-after portrait artists in America during the late 1750s and early 1760s. This demonstrates that some early residents of Westerly\, Rhode Island were aware of artistic trends and talents beyond what was locally available\, and that at least one Westerly family had enough social clout to attract the artist’s attention and could afford multiple commissions by him. This presentation by local Art Historian\, Dr. Sara Champlin\, will consider what having four portraits as opposed to one – or even a pair – can tell us about the family’s hopes\, dreams\, and ambitions\, as well as about their economic status and social reality. \nFree to members; $5.00 for not-yet members \n
